Social Issues - What Do I Chose?

One thing major part about being an ABP coordinator and an participant is picking a social issue. In my opinion, this is a difficult task when it comes to picking and planning a trip, beside the financial aspect of course. With so many different social issues out there, how can we decide which social issue is better than the other?

For me, I had to reflect (ABP loves reflection BTW) on (1) what was going on in today's society and (2) realize what caught my attention the most. I am very big on health, women's rights, and education/community development. Many of my social issue choices were based off of my experience as well. I have volunteered with:

Harbor House - Domestic Violence, Women Health/Health

Clean the World Orlando- Health

VA Medical Center - Health

Project Bithlo - Community Development and Education

All of these sites exposed my passion for my current social issue interests.

My suggestion to participants and coordinators would to find that social issue that gets you FIRED UP to make a change in my community. Dont forget to also EXPLORE societal issues because you never know how passionate you can become about something until you learn and witness it.

I encourage everyone to do their RESEARCH on the issues in these communities are trips will be going to. Attend all the Pre-Trip activities will help you understanding their specific social issue and give an opportunity to ask questions and learn more.

Find what your passionate! Make sure to learn as much as you can!
